Description
My fellow photographer and I embarked on a daring adventure, braving the early morning hours and frigid temperatures to ascend Clingmans Dome. Our mission was to capture the breathtaking sunrise, and we succeeded. The experience was nothing short of awe-inspiring.
Standing tall at 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome reigns as the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It also holds the title of the highest point in Tennessee and the third highest mountain east of the Mississippi. Only Mt. Mitchell (6,684 feet) and Mt. Craig (6,647), both located in Mt. Mitchell State Park in western North Carolina, surpass its height. The observation tower perched atop Clingmans Dome offers visitors a stunning 360° view of the Smokies and beyond, but it requires a steep half-mile climb to reach the summit.
On clear days, the views stretch over 100 miles, providing a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding landscape. However, air pollution often obscures the view, limiting visibility to under 20 miles.

It has been many a year since I was in this spot. I don’t recall seeing such beauty. It must be your talent Steve, because the lighting, detail, and depth are magnificent!
Steve Rich replied:
Thank you Gregory, we hiked up in complete darkness to catch the sunrise. It was amazing.
