Description
As the sun rises on Mead Street in Aiken, South Carolina, one can't help but be captivated by the stunning view of the Polo Fields. Mead Street is just one of many streets that offer a glimpse of this breathtaking sight. The city has allowed large oak tree limbs to create a tunnel effect, adding to the charm and beauty of the area. It's no wonder that I find myself traveling this way many times a week.
Aiken, the largest city in Aiken County, is located in western South Carolina and is part of the Augusta-Richmond County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1835 and named after William Aiken, the president of the South Carolina Railroad. It became part of Aiken County in 1871 when the county was formed from parts of Orangeburg, Lexington, Edgefield, and Barnwell counties.
Home to the University of South Carolina Aiken, Aiken has a population of 30,869 according to 2019 U.S. Census estimates. The National Civic League recognized Aiken with the All-America City Award in 1997, and Southern Living named it the best small town of the South.
Whether you're a resident or a visitor, Aiken's charm and beauty are sure to leave a lasting impression. So take a stroll down Mead Street and experience the magic for yourself.
